ARE YOUR FIRE DOORS SAFE? USING A FIRE DOOR RETAINER...

March 28, 2018

Fire doors are installed and designed to stop the spread of fire within buildings, however, fire doors can only fulfill this role, if they are closed when the fire starts or if they are electronically operated to close when the fire alarm is triggered.

Fire doors are equipped with controlled door closing devices, which close the door after a person has passed through.  It is all too common to see a fire control door wedged or held open, preventing the fire door from doing its job in the event of a fire which has the potential to block escape routes and endanger lives.  This is not just dangerous, it is also illegal and can lead to large fines.

Fire door retainers hold the doors in the open position (against the pressure from the door closer) and release the door in the case of a fire, allowing the door closer to shut the door.

The British Standard 7273-4:2015 Code of Practice for the operation of fire protection measures – Part 4: actuation of release mechanisms for doors gives guidance on the installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire door holding systems. The system / hardware used to hold the doors open must also be approved to EN1155 standard.

An easy to install, battery powered door retainer which is suitable for use on fire rated doors. When the fire alarm sounds the Dorgard automatically releases the door from its held open position, safely and effectively closing it.

This product is ideal for fitting in high use areas as it allows for an easy flow of foot traffic and access throughout a building – perfect for offices, such as here at Spiller Yeovil, hotel lobbies and college corridor doors. The plunger is easily operated by foot and grips onto the floor or floor plate provided, holding the door open.

Dorgard does not require hard wiring; it is a wire-free product so less costly to fit than an EMF hold open overhead door closer. It will release a door when the fire alarm sounds for a minimum of 14 seconds.

A BS EN 1155 compliant solution for holding open a fire door at any angle and also has the benefit of allowing for increased ventilation throughout a building which can improve the well-being and health of occupants, especially during the summer months.

The sound activated Dorgard will alert you when the battery is running low.

They are manufactured in the UK and have a 24 month warranty.

Finishes available include white, red and black.
